So, Aces isn’t really cutting it as a daily. The transmission issues are getting bothersome (I have one to swap in, but trying to find the time with a newborn just isn’t happening), and the lack of good HVAC in it has sucked during the last few weeks here in Seattle.
Anyway, I’m seriously looking at getting something different. I’ve always wanted a Wrangler, but I just can’t justify a best MPG of 19 hwy (yes I’ve driven a TJ & JK). I like the 1st Gen 4Runners like this
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
, but I’m not sure if it will work well for our family.
Ideally I’d like something that will baby, has decent cargo room, and it would be nice if it can tow a small trailer/haul junk with on the rare occasion I need to make a dump run, but that’s not an absolute need. I also want it to be fun and not “beige”. The wife said a Wrangler wouldn’t be out of the question MPG-wise since I carpool and we use my co-worker’s car (I give him gas money every week), but I like to occasionally get out and go for a drive.
Thoughts from the Oppo gallery? Budget is around $10k, but I’m cheap. Seattle area but not afraid to hit Spokompton or Portlandia for something that catches the eye.

What about an FJ60/62? You won’t find a perfect one for that price but it would be reliable, go up in value over time, and they are cool.

Dukie — two questions. What is Aces? And would you like to be the subject for this week’s
Mid Week Match-Up
on my little blog? -Vince

Aces is my 1981 Toyota Celica. It’s predecessor, Grimace, was supposed to be a pure project car, but I made some sacrifices for my wife’s benefit in order to buy her a Buick Enclave. When that happened, Grimace/Aces became my daily. I will most likely keep Aces, but put it in the garage to actually make it the project it was supposed to be.
And sure, I’m your huckleberry for MWMU.

My only concerns are the higher mileage on those (although the one has had the heads & timing belt done so...). I’ve also heard that the head gaskets blow more than a junky looking for a fix on those Subaru motors. Am I misunderstanding that?

Oh! I do like the 1st Gen’s removable top, but those are nice.

This would definitely have enough room for your family. Plus, the 5VZE can handle around 400 at the crank stock...

That Forester is nice, but as I’ve said above, I’ve heard that they have headgasket issues. That may have been earlier models or another model (WRX/STi), I don’t really remember.
No on the Mazda. My sister-in-law had one, and I wasn’t happy riding in it.

That’s a possibility with the Turbo motors, I’m honestly not too sure. I was just looking for something a little fun and they seemed to fit my criteria.

While nice, it might be too big. My wife’s Enclave seats 7 and is the de facto kid hauler.

I imagine getting a sleeping kiddo out of a first gen 4runner would be less than ideal.
